The trap man Larsen trap is an effective way of catching magpies and other corvids, the trap has 2 catching compartment at one side of the trap and a large decoy compartment at the other which is large enough to be legal to use in the England.
The trap is made from heavy gauge 1” x 1” wire mesh and electro plated after manufacture for a long lasting hard wearing finish, the springs on the cage are a heavy duty spring steel made in the UK.
The trap works best with a live decoy bird being placed in the large decoy compartment of the trap to attract the other magpies in the area to it.

Magpie’s can be a real pest
I love all wildlife but this year several magpies have taken upon themselves to start pulling our thatched roof to bits looking for insects to eat, so something had to be done to catch them.
The Larsen trap is extremely well built, strong and simple to use. However, after only a week in use I’m yet to catch one of the culprits. I’m guessing I haven’t come up with the right bait so far, relying on a real chicken’s egg laid on the roof and two dummy eggs inside the cage. I’ve also tried something a local farmer recommended – bread with tomato sauce dolloped on it. They ate the bread on the lawn, but didn’t enter the trap to eat more inside.
The manufacture’s recommend a dead animal, like a rabbit, but I don’t have access to such things and not really sure I’d want to either.
But I’m quietly optimistic that once I find the right bait and maybe re-position the trap in a different location I’ll get lucky.
